Unit Eight
Analyzing Statistics
This unit extends the concepts involving collecting and displaying data from previous grades and provides opportunities for students to begin to think statistically as they make sense of data. The activities in this unit help students develop proficiency displaying and summarizing data, as well as recognizing its variability. Students will explore and analyze data displays including dot plots, histograms, and box plots, and summarize data using more formal measures of center such as mean and median. These measures will be compared to the overall shape of the data in conjunction with clusters, gaps, peaks, and outliers. Students will also learn about measures in variability such as range and interquartile range. Students will apply these statistical measures in real world investigations.
