Unit Nine
Rational Numbers and the Coordinate Plane
This unit extends our base-ten number system to include positive and negative rational numbers. Students use number lines to conceptualize and model positive and negative integers and rational numbers. Number lines as well as absolute values are used to reason about comparing and ordering rational numbers. Students extend their understanding of horizontal and vertical number lines to represent a coordinate plane using two perpendicular number lines and then locate and plot points in all four quadrants. Coordinate planes are used to review the idea of distance on the coordinate plane and introduce a reflected point in a plane. Students solve real world problems involving rational numbers.
